It's a long overdue honor for one of the most innovative coaches in hockey history.
My favorite quote about Mr Shero is one from you, Scoop

It was your take on the friendship between Freddie and Anatoli Tarasov “It was a perfect friendship, because Tarasov spoke no English and neither did Freddie."

Congrats to The Fog.

I remember when someone asked him where he came up with his motivational sayings and he informed the interviewer that they came from the back of cereal boxes.

My favourite, " winning, starts with beginning."

Thank you very much for your kind words, acd513. Writing something like this about Freddie, however, made that pretty easy for me.

Life is just a place where we spend time between hockey games

23 years waiting for his rightful honor to be recognized is a crime

Thanks for sharing this, Scoop.

Reading about Coach Shero today takes me back to when my dad was sharing his love of hockey with my brother and me. Dad instilled a love of ice hockey, Gene Hart, Kate Smith, America, Bobby Clarke, Bernie Parent, Don Saleski, Ed Van Impe, Gary Dornhoefer (Dad's fave), Bob Kelly, Bill Barber, and all of the Flyers from as early as I can remember living above Haddonwood Liquors in Westmont until I graduated high school in 1990. Dad tied all of this together -- because his beloved team did. He would love reading Shero's quotes from newspapers, newspaper clippings, & the Flyers books (Score! by Gene Hart, for instance).

I grew up learning about the changes Coach Shero made to the game. The first thing I did upon learning of today's news was text my mom to tell my dad that Fred Shero was inducted. I'm happy for all the folks you mention, Scoop, but also happy for you as you get to revel in the celebration.

It's been a great day to be a Flyers fan.

Thanks for the wonderful comments and the kind words about me as well. Freddie was indeed one of a kind and it was a true gift to have known him for so many years. (His son, Ray, whom I have known since he was a kid running around the bowl of the Spectrum, is a chip off the old block too.) He was truly a "one of a kind" and the kind that hardly exists in our game anymore I'm afraid.

Awesome job Scoop. The last line sums it up perfectly for me. "But to me and many others this is just giving you the due that you had earned decades ago ... for us you were always a "Hall of Famer"!! "

That was a wonderfully written tribute to a remarkable man, Scoop. The knowledge and insight that you bring here from your long association with the Flyers is something for which we are indeed grateful! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks to all who commented for your kind words. Freddie was an amazing hockey man who should have been in the Hall much much earlier. I was happy to pass along a few stories about my encounters with him here and glad you all enjoyed them.
